Behavior is a means of communication. When young children exhibit challenging behavior they are usually “trying to communicate something”. They are trying to tell us something about an object, a person or an activity they want or don’t want. Our job is to figure out what they are attempting to communicate. As child care providers we partner with parents to help a child ” find a better way”.
There are simple and effective strategies that can be used to guide the behavior of young children:
Establish expectations: Rules should be fair, consistent and enforceable. Established routines are helpful and reduce anxiety.
Activities should be age appropriate: This helps to keep frustrations to a minimum.
Reinforce positive behavior: Gentle reminders and redirecting help children to understand expectations that can be achieved.
Structure the environment for success: Room arrangement plays a large role in eliminating potential problems such as running, overcrowding, reducing noise levels and having enough space for children to feel comfortable.
When a child is misbehaving try to ignore the inappropriate behavior and help to focus his attention elsewhere. When the inappropriate behavior ceases be sure to give him positive attention immediately telling him what he is doing well.
