Hey, Mom and Dad, Let’s Get Reading!

The National Education Association’s “Read Across America Day” was a nationwide reading celebration that takes place annually on March 2nd – Dr. Seuss’s birthday!

Across the country, thousands of schools, libraries and community centers participate by bringing together children, teens and books.  Next year you too can join the fun.

If you haven’t visited www.Seussville.com, check out its games and activities for children of all ages.  It offers the following tips on reading with your child:

-Give encouragement.  Read the words aloud to your child, point to the pictures, say the words together and laugh with your child.

-Encourage your child to make up another character that might appear in the book.  What would it look like?  What would it say?  What would you call it?

-When the story is finished, ask your child about his/her favorite passages, characters and illustrations.

-Letters and words are everywhere.  When driving with your child on a familiar route, read the signs aloud.  Make your next trip to the grocery store “interactive” as you read the food items .

Why not plan a trip this year to the Dr. Seuss National Memorial Garden at the Springfield Museums, located in Springfield Massachusetts: http://www.catinthehat.org/

Happy reading from your friends at The Tender Nest!
