Scaffolding instruction is a tool that helps provide a natural way for children to learn by reflecting on something they have previously experienced. Scaffolding supports the child in learning something new based on what they already know or can do.
Scaffolding can be easily used in an early childhood setting. Child care providers begin by exploring subject matter through activities and hands-on learning in order to discover what children know about a subject and how much more they would like to learn. Once a provider has an idea of what a child knows a deeper understanding on the child’s part can be encouraged about that subject.
As a provider learns more about the child’s knowledge, materials and conversations can be presented so children can learn to become more independent as they think and learn.
The Tender Nest provides many opportunities to utilize “scaffolding” as a learning tool. We will encourage your child by building up their experiences.
